5 Questions to Ask Yourself at Year-End [updated for 2023]
If you’re at all like me, you’re feeling the crush of the end of another calendar year right now. It is objectively one of the busiest seasons so let’s get down to brass tacks!
The end of 2023 may come as a welcome relief after a turbulent year marked by economic volatility, political polarization, climate disasters, and public health challenges. Or it might bring waves of dread and foreboding for what’s to come in 2024.
Either way–and even in the toughest of times–there is learning, growth, and progress to reflect on.
As we turn the page to 2024, there is hope that better days may lie ahead after surviving a (possibly grueling) 2023. The new year represents a chance to start fresh, reset priorities, and set intentional goals. With this sense of possibility on the horizon, now is the perfect time for reflection and clarity.
Instead of talking about how to set New Year's resolutions (that, hey, we know we’re likely not to keep #realtalk), here are five questions to ask yourself this month to spark deeper reflection–or to gain some clarity and groundedness relatively quickly.
5 Questions to Ask Yourself at Year-End
When I look back on 2023, what am I most proud of accomplishing or overcoming? This includes major milestones, wins, personal growth, and states of being. (You can list multiple achievements.)
What important lessons or insights did I gain in 2023? How can I apply what I learned to make 2024 even better, personally, professionally, or otherwise?
What pleasantly surprised me or exceeded my expectations in 2023? What good came out of difficult situations?
How do I want to feel–emotionally and physically–in 2024? What versions of myself do I want to cultivate?
What is my top goal or priority for 2024? What tangible outcomes or states of being do I want to achieve?
I encourage you to block protected time amidst the hustle and bustle of the season to thoughtfully and compassionately reflect on your personal growth. Let the lessons and insights you gained this past year guide you in crafting goals and intentions that feel meaningful. Then, look to 2024 with purpose and possibility. Though challenges will always remain, there is power in pausing, opening your mind, and setting mindful ambitions.
Wishing you presence, peace, clarity, and renewed motivation in 2023’s final days and 2024’s early ones. Onward.
